Stephen King, the author who needs no introduction, making this post nice, short and sweet, announced his next upcoming book which will be a crime novel.
LATER is due out in March 2021, and as you can see, there’s a boy and a woman on the cover. That woman is the boy’s mother. But as far as that, we don’t know until we have it all broken down in the synopsis.
Snatching this from Amazon, it reads:
The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood. But Jamie is no ordinary child. Born with an unnatural ability his mom urges him to keep secret, Jamie can see what no one else can see and learn what no one else can learn. But the cost of using this ability is higher than Jamie can imagine – as he discovers when an NYPD detective draws him into the pursuit of a killer who has threatened to strike from beyond the grave.
LATER is Stephen King at his finest, a terrifying and touching story of innocence lost and the trials that test our sense of right and wrong. With echoes of King’s classic novel It, LATER is a powerful, haunting, unforgettable exploration of what it takes to stand up to evil in all the faces it wears.
WHAT I SEE WHEN I READ THE BLURB
From the top, we know that the struggle is real. Mom and son are having a hard time in life, but to top it all off, having to hide his true self must make things twenty times worse because that’s double struggle – struggling with hard times and struggling to be someone he isn’t.
The boy is basically brilliant because he can do what no one else can, see and learn what the so ordinary people around him can’t. This alone would have made him the most popular kid in school and my best friend, but I’m not in the book and King didn’t write me in it because obviously my presence would have changed the entire story.
Anyway, the police officer that shows up in the story’s synopsis is his mom’s lover. How do I know? Because of EW. (Stephen King tweeted that, by the way…see. Link and all.
It looks like this NYPD officer is about to pull her and her son into some mayhem that they aren’t getting paid to do, and that is, have her son who is already on edge, to locate a killer. That’s right, this boy is lured into helping find a whole killer who vowed to strike from beyond the grave.
I desperately hope mom and son got handsomely paid for their services. This book sounds so good.
By the way, this is a Hard Case Crime novel, and will be in paperback, hardback and ebook.
But here’s another thing…other than crime, it stands to echo It. Therefore, there may be something about this killer that goes a bit more sinister than our regular Michael Myers with a butcher knife.
This killer may really be clownin’.
